Arena Operating Season & Schedule

The T.G. Smith Arena ice surface is available for use from August to March. The ice surface is available for rental between the hours of 6:00am and 12:00am daily except on the following holidays: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.

Outdoor Seasonal Rinks

The City of Steinbach maintains two free public outdoor skating rinks during the winter season, weather permitting. One rink is located on the corner of Barkman Avenue and Elmdale Street and is for both skating and shinny hockey. The other outdoor rink is for pleasure skating only, located beside the Jake Epp Library at 255 Elmdale Street.

During the summer, the outdoor rink on the corner of Barkman Avenue and Elmdale Street is converted into outdoor volleyball courts. 


T.G. Smith Arena Rental Fees

Non Prime Ice (Before 4:00 pm on weekdays) $135 / hour
Prime Ice (After 4:00 pm on weekdays; Saturdays and Sundays) $165 / hour 
Game (based on 3 hour time slot) *We reserve the right to charge extra for special events - $495*
Outdoor Ice $50 / hour

Youth Recreational Hockey Program 

Welcome to the City of Steinbach Youth Recreational Hockey Program!

Registration for the Winter 2025 Season (January-March) starts Friday, December 6, 2024 at 8am, online only.

Our goal is to provide a recreational hockey program whose focus is to provide a non-competitive hockey environment for children ages 7-16 to participate in the game. The cost for the program is $100. 

Please note: this program is strictly for youth NOT participating in another hockey program, association or league.

Equipment Requirements

Full Hockey Equipment, including: Skates, Shin Pads, Socks, Athletic Supporter, Hockey Pants, Hockey Gloves, Stick, Elbow pads, Shoulder Pads, Neck Guard, Helmet with Full Cage, Mouth Guard.

The above equipment is required to ensure the safety of the participants.  

Program Rules

  1. No Body Checking
  2. No Slap Shots
  3. Adherence to all Hockey Rules (i.e. tripping, hooking, slashing, etc).
  4. No Fighting
  5. No Profanity
  6. Participants are to respect their fellow participants. Bullying or disrespectful treatment of others will result in removal from the ice and/or program.
     

Winter Schedule

There are two Youth Recreational Hockey slots scheduled for this fall starting January 4th and ending in March. Depending on age and availability at registration, your child can be registered for one of the following: 

Saturdays – 12:15-1:15pm (Ages 7-11) – T.G. Smith Arena, max. 25 participants
Saturdays – 1:30-2:30pm (Ages 12-16) – T.G. Smith Arena, max. 25 participants

Youth Recreational Hockey will run most Saturday afternoons throughout the season. When a tournament or special event is in place, ice may not be available and an alternative slot will be sought out. Notification of any change will be provided to the participants in advance. Participants will be guaranteed 10 ice sessions.

Structure

Each on ice session will include two parts:
Part 1: 10-15 minutes – Skill Development including skating drills, puck handling, shooting and team play.
Part 2: 45 minutes – Scrimmage/Play – Participants will be split into age-appropriate groups and game play will occur.

Volunteers

This program will not run without the assistance of volunteers. Please get involved in your child's activity. We will need on-ice volunteers for coaching, officiating and organizing. Please keep in mind that all on ice volunteers will be required to wear helmets at all times.

Cancellations and Refunds

  1. The City of Steinbach will not provide a refund if an illness occurs or symptoms of an illness are present.
  2. Participants who are registered for Rec Hockey can withdraw 1 week prior to the start date, and will receive a full refund less the Administration Fee of $8 (Plus GST) and a Cancellation Fee of $20 (Plus GST).
  3. Cancellations made after the Youth Recreational Hockey program has started are not eligible for a refund.
     

How Do I Register?

Registration for the Winter 2025 Season (January-March) starts Friday, December 6, 2024 at 8am, online only.

Everyone is required to set up an account online before registering for the program. This account can be used for all future recreation registrations with the City of Steinbach, including swimming lessons. There is no fee to use this service.

Note: If you have already created an account for programs at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre, you can use the same account to register for youth hockey.

Before registering:

  • Ensure you have all personal information ready to input once registration starts (i.e. birthdates, address, postal code, phone numbers, etc.).
  • Have your credit card (Visa or Mastercard) information available so that it can be easily entered during the registration process.

Under "Course Name" fill in "Rec Hockey" to view available sessions.


Public Skating and Stick & Puck Time

Lace up those skates and head to the T.G. Smith Arena for some free Public Skating during scheduled times!

Or, grab your hockey sticks, pucks and helmets*, and head to the T.G. Smith Arena for some free Stick & Puck during scheduled times!

*Helmets are required to participate in Stick & Puck skates.

Times subject to change in the event of tournaments or special events. The T.G. Smith Arena is located at 321 Elmdale Street in Steinbach.
